OpenAI's first AI hardware is coming, and it's built for Codex

OpenAI is preparing to unveil a new piece of hardware, but it is not the AI gadget many have been waiting for. Ahead of a July 15 announcement, the company has shared a brief teaser hinting at a physical accessory designed for Codex, its AI-powered coding tool.

The reveal has generated fresh interest in OpenAI's growing hardware ambitions, even as the company's larger collaboration with former Apple design chief Jony Ive remains a few months away.

The teaser, posted on X, offers only a glimpse of a compact square-shaped device fitted with multiple buttons alongside the message, "Your favorite Codex shortcuts are getting an upgrade."

While OpenAI has stopped short of revealing its purpose, the company has confirmed that the product has been developed in partnership with Work Louder, a brand known for building programmable keyboards and macro pads aimed at creative professionals and developers.

Despite the excitement surrounding the announcement, this is not the standalone AI companion that OpenAI has been building with Jony Ive. Instead, the upcoming launch appears to focus on improving how developers interact with Codex through dedicated hardware controls.

The silhouette shown in the teaser closely resembles Work Louder's Creator Micro 2, a compact macro pad featuring mechanical keys, a joystick and touch-sensitive controls. Such devices allow users to assign customised shortcuts, macros and application-specific commands to physical buttons, making repetitive workflows faster and more efficient.

Although neither company has confirmed the specifications, the Codex-branded accessory is widely expected to offer programmable controls tailored for coding tasks and AI-assisted software development. Work Louder has previously collaborated with companies such as Figma to create custom macro pads featuring preconfigured shortcuts, making a similar approach for Codex a logical next step.

With the launch scheduled for July 15, OpenAI is expected to share more details about the device's capabilities, compatibility and pricing in the coming weeks.
