YouTube switches off mobile app support on older Apple TV, iOS devices

Google will now switch off support for its YouTube app in older iOS devices along with the second generation Apple TV. YouTube has announced a change in its data API that will make its app unavailable to a range of Smart TVs and gaming consoles too.First spotted by MacRumours, the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch will require iOS 7 or above for the YouTube app to function. Google made the announcement on their support page and said, "As we upgrade the YouTube Data API to bring more features, we’ll begin shutting down the old version on April 20, 2015. This will result in the current YouTube app not working on certain device models from 2012 and older." It added, "Select devices manufactured in 2012 and earlier, including Sony TVs & Blu-ray Discs, Panasonic TVs & Blu-ray Discs, older iOS devices, and devices running older versions of Google TV."Users using iOS 6 or below, will have to head to the mobile YouTube site at http://m.youtube.com to view videos. The blog post also shared details on how to configure your current devices. The report by MacRumours pointed out that changes in the API affects several other older devices in addition to the Apple TV and iOS devices which include, those running old versions of Google TV and many other Smart televisions too.As of now, the official YouTube app will only be available to the newer lot of Smart TVs, blu-ray players, game consoles along with other streaming devices. According to a YouTube Blogpost, beginning early May, users who use older devices with the unsupported YouTube app will see a discontinuation video. Towards the end of the month, all apps which use the old API, will display 410 Gone HTTP responses.
