YouTube adds 'play' icon to titles to help users spot 'noisy' tabs

Popular video-viewing site YouTube has introduced a minor tweak to the title of its video page to make it simpler for users to spot a “noisy” tab.

Users already know that YouTube plays content automatically when they open a video – be it an advertisement or a movie trailer. Now in situations where they have multiple videos playing in different tabs, users find it cumbersome to spot the “noisy” tab. Once the update sets in, users will be able to spot a tiny “play” Unicode character in the title of their video webpage; this icon appears only when the video is playing. Once they’ve hit the pause button, users will see that the “play” Unicode character disappears from the title.

Guys at Google System were the first ones to spot this, and according to their report, YouTube has only started rolling out this feature.

We attempted to look for this Unicode character ourselves, but it did not show up. A TNW report claims that this new feature isn’t browser-specific, though. We’re hoping to see it soon.

Although minor, this feature will definitely do its bit in enhancing user experience on the platform. YouTube has also been shifting some of its focus to user-generated content for some time now. The Google-owned video site is launching a series of videos that will give a step-by-step guide for users who want to turn their channel from a hobby to a full-time gig.

The series, called YouTube Pro, will provide information and advice spanning a range of issues, such as crowdfunding, attracting and managing advertisers, using a manager, recording content series and a lot more.
