Yahoo! Mail shuts down in China

The shutters have finally gone down on Yahoo! Mail in China, four months after the company announced its decision to do so, Tech In Asia reports.

While Yahoo! China had stopped taking in new registrations for its email service in April itself, it had given users time until August 19 to login and migrate their email to an alternate service.

Interestingly, Alibaba, the local e-commerce brand that runs Yahoo! China, is looking to get all Chinese Yahoo! Mail users onto Aliyun, its email service. Those who indeed jump onto Aliyun will be able to forward emails from their old account till December 31, 2013. According to the site, other popular options that users could go for include Tencent’s QQ Mail or Netease’s 163 Mail. Even as Yahoo! Mail is ousted, the company’s search engine continues to function in the country; it is the seventh largest according to recent figures.
