Why Game of Thrones Deserves a Video Game Adaptation

Game of Thrones, HBO’s latest fantasy drama is just plain awesome. Based on George R.R. Martin's best-seller series of novels A Song of Ice and Fire, this show will shock, awe and surprise you with its gut-wrenching plot, hard-hitting violence and memorable characters.

It is also one of the few TV shows that deserve a video game adaptation. Unfortunately the video game adaptation in the works from Cyanide Software is an RTS (Real Time Strategy) game and while I personally have nothing against that genre, I strongly feel going the action RPG route would suit this franchise better. Here’s why:

Just another day in Westeros

So let’s get the obvious out of the way first shall we? Game of Thrones is as violent as it gets with beheadings and all sorts of throat/stomach tearing popping up as frequently as naked parts do (yeah, there’s a lot of that in the show as well). A video game adaptation could obviously up the ante a bit with a Blade of Darkness-esque approach to violence where players could cut of the hands and legs of enemies and then proceed to pummel them with it. That’s how Khal Drogo probably rolled anyway.

Like a boss!

Game of Thrones boasts of a myriad of interesting characters who are all sorts of shades of grey. Sure some of them are complete douches you want to strangle with your bare hands but sometimes even the good guys are forced to do stuff they normally wouldn’t when their backs are up against the wall. Plus some of the bad dudes are just plain badass and we’d be rooting for them even if they set innocent villages on fire. Tell me you wouldn’t blindly follow this man into battle.

While most shows are content with happy endings, Game of Thrones smacks viewers upside their heads leaving them with plot twists that could mess with their heads for days on end. It makes its viewers emotionally invest in certain characters and then in a blink of an eye, snuffs them out. It is a cruel reminder that the Kingdom of Westeros is a complete bitch where no one is really safe, not even children.

A world well worth exploring

Like any RPG worth its salt, the Kingdom of Westeros is full of stuff that would give any video game fanatic an instant tent in his/her pants. You have dragons, zombies, a mythological race of savage creatures called the White Walkers and lots more that HBO hasn’t even scratched the surface of. With nearly six more books to go, there’s no telling what author George R.R. Martin's imagination is capable of conjuring up .

And hey, if this game never becomes a reality, there’s always Skyrim at the end of the year.
