Web and mobile version of Nintendo's eShop rumoured to be in the works

Nintendo for long has been the only one of the three big console makers to not have a web-based version of its eShop. According to Eurogamer, reports are popping up indicating that the ancient gaming company might be looking to launch a version of the eShop that can be accessed from a web browser or even smartphones.

The eShop will apparently be available to everyone, whether they own a Nintendo system or not. This is puzzling, since not many would find much of a use for the eShop if they don't own a Nintendo gaming device. This might indicate that the company may be thinking of going multiplatform with its games, but it is unlikely considering how rigid Nintendo is aobut the platform-exclusiveness of its titles.

eShop... now coming to web and smartphones

Using the eShop, gamers can not only purchase digital versions of full-fledged games such as ZombiU, but also older games that were released for the SNES or NES. It is possible that the older games, dubbed the Virtual Console, might soon be made available for other gaming devices, but once again, considering Nintendo’s stance on exclusivity, this seems rather unlikely.

The company is undoubtedly hoping that this move boosts sales of the Wii U, which so far hasn’t been moving too many units. The console attempted to jumpstart the new generation of consoles early by hitting stores in November. However, it hasn’t manage to do very well because of the relatively underpowered hardware, which both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will be able to overpower.
