Virgin Airlines Bans Sony Laptop Batteries
Virgin Airlines now prohibits its passengers from using Apple and Dell laptop batteries made by Sony in flight.
Air carrier Virgin has asked its passengers to remove batteries from their Apple and Dell laptops before take off, after recent reports claimed that some laptop batteries could be a fire hazard. Virgin is the third airline to prohibit the use of these laptops after Qantas and Korean Air.
Dell announced in August, that it had recalled more than 4 million laptop batteries made by Sony due to a manufacturing fault in the machines, which cause the batteries to catch fire. Apple had recalled 1.8 million batteries also made by Sony which were thought to be hazardous. The airline announced "Virgin is in communication with Apple and Dell. As soon as this safety issue is resolved these restrictions will be lifted."
Virgin airlines passengers are now required to wrap up and protect the batteries in their carry- on baggage. Moreover, each passenger is allowed only two batteries on board.
