US to Loosen Grip on Internet?

The much debated US control of the Internet Corporation for Names and Numbers (ICANN) has taken another turn. The Bush administration has just announced that it may be willing to cede at least some of its control of the Internet domain name system. The US Department of Commerce has outlined four principles to guide the transition to private sector management of the Internet DNS.The announcement comes at a time when the non profit organization ICANN is contemplating the renewal of its agreement with the US government. John Kneuer, the acting assistant secretary for US Communications and Information confirmed that the government is committed to the transition of handing over the DNS to the private sector.Read more here.
