Unboxing the Samsung Galaxy S5: There's a lot to like under that plastic shell

Easily one of the biggest launches this year, the Samsung Galaxy S5 is already proving to be a huge hit for Samsung. In the short amount of time that Samsung launched its flagship, the S5 has already swept about 0.7 percent of the entire market. That's a pretty big achievement for a single phone given how vast the Android space is. We have the retail unit of the phone courtesy Samsung and thought we'd bring you a quick unboxing video and little tour of the phone itself.

The S5 is an itinerant update over last year’s S4 and features a slightly bigger 5.1-inch display with the same Super AMOLED panel and 1080p resolution. Samsung has added a fingerprint scanner in the home button and a heart rate monitor on the back under the camera, which are two highlights of this phone.

As a result of the waterproofing treatment, the phone has significantly larger bezels. In India, the device comes powered by an Exynos octa-core processor and not the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801. Samsung has made changes in the processor as compared to the S4 and now the octa-core CPU can have all eight cores running at the same time.

Another area where Samsung claims great advancements is the camera. There’s a 16-megapixel main camera on the S5, armed with interesting editing options and several shooting modes, including selective focus.

The S5 will have to contend with the likes of the HTC One M8 and the Sony Xperia Z2 in the race to claim the coveted top spot. Compared to the other flagships, the S5 seems to have enough going for it despite it's plastic-clad chassis. While the Z2 is yet to enter the Indian market, the One M8 has already made quite a good first impression on us and what's more, it's a bit cheaper than the S5 as well.
