Twitter's big announcement: Pay for vowels, sckrs

Find tweeting with 140 characters hard? Tweets always going in minus? Well it might just get easier now with Twitter's new service. Regular Twitter users can now only post twts without vowels. If you want to tweet with vowels get ready to cough up $5 per tweet.

Twitter wrote in a blog post today:

Starting today, we are shifting to a two-tiered service: Everyone can use our basic service, Twttr, but you only get consonants. For five dollars a month, you can use our premium "Twitter" service which also includes vowels.

We're doing this because we believe that by eliminating vowels, we'll encourage a more efficient and "dense" form of communication. We also see an opportunity to diversify our revenue stream.

So why is Twitter doing this? Money, money. How long did you people expect you'd be allowed to Tweet away for free. Plus with Facebook making billions by the day and launching their Android phone, Twitter knows the competition is going to get tougher.

Twitter's also made some other changes:

"Y" will remain free forever assures the micro-blogging site. The vowels in URLs will be also be free forever. You can also Tweet in non-Latin characters based languages, like Japanese, Chinese, Arabic or Korean. These languages will remain unaffected by our service change.

Extra room, better Tweets

Advertisers will get some special treatement. They can expand their tweet to 141 characters. That's a whole character people. The price of the extra character is based on a bidding system reflecting the popularity of the character you would like to add. There is no option to purchase a second additional character at this time, says Twitter.

We think this is a really smart move by Twitter or rather Twttr. Frankly it was just too easy for people to get on to the site and tweet out the first thing they felt like saying. With the whole paying for vowels rules, Twttr is likely to spark a whole language revolution. And perhaps will put a lot more thought into what they tweet or rather twt.

Imagine trying to spell out 'I hate this shit', without vowels. Impossible right? So inevitably people will end up paying Twitter.
