Twitter introduces 'password killer' Digits to let you log-in on web using your phone

Twitter has launched their new phone-number based log-in system termed 'Digits' that allows users to log into apps and services using just their phone. This feature reduces the stress of remembering multiple passwords.Back in October, we had noted that Twitter had formally declared war on passwords during a developers’ conference in San Francisco, unveiling a new system that allowed users to log-in to mobile apps with a phone number. Jeff Seibert, director for mobile platforms at the popular social network had introduced Digits, a free tool which Twitter offers in 28 languages and most countries around the world.A report by ZDNet points out that with Digits log-in for web, developers can implement the phone number-based log-in on an app's companion website with just a few lines of code. However, app users will still need to sign up through an app prior to logging in to its website.Users will receive a confirmation code via SMS on their phones when they first log in from the web. With Digits, the company makes an attempt at engaging more into product development, alongside a suite of mobile development tools called Fabric and a crash-tracking app called Crashlytics, pointed out The Verge.Twitter's VP of product for revenue Kevin Weil said as the platform grows, Twitter will not just be viewed as the consumer app, but as a a broader mobile services company.This news comes a few days later after WhatsApp announced that it has unveiled a new service for sending messages from a Web browser. WhatsApp, which claims some 500 million users, said its Web service will be a “mirror” and would require an Internet-connected phone to work. The new messaging service currently only works with Google’s Chrome browser and will not be available to iPhone users.
