Medal of Honor: Allied Assault

MoH:AA is one of the best gun-and-run shooters I’ve laid my hands on. The action in the game was really intense, to that the point that you’d actually imagine bullets whizzing past your ear while you played it. The game captured the chaos of war extremely well, and delivered them with some really bad-ass visuals for the time. The game’s Omaha beach level was the most intense recreation of the event in any game, and it was definitely amongst the best first-person shooter experiences I’ve had to date.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert

The mere mention of C&C: Red Alert, bring back some fond memories to most RTS veterans. The game’s developer Westwood Studios, were renowned for making some of the best strategy games ever, and I’m sure that they were really satisfied with the outcome in this case. The game twisted the World War II storyline by adding some Sci-Fi elements, forming an awesome platform for a mix of some really awesome futuristic as well as standard units. The game went down in the Guinness Book of Records as the best selling RTS of all time (it sold close to 12 million copies!), so it speaks for itself.

Call of Duty

The best way to describe CoD, is that it’s like being inside a kick-f***in-ass World War II movie. The CoD campaign allowed you to play as a part of the American, Russian and British army, so you could check out the war from different angles. You’d always have a bunch of friendly soldiers fighting around you, so you’d never have to go solo. That was a really good thing, since it made you feel like you’re amidst an actual war, rather than a crazed shoot-em-all killing spree.

Battlefield 1942

The Battlefield series gave war-mongers something to die for – Large scale multiplayer battles. The game modes in Battlefield 1942 support up to 64 players in some pretty fast paced, team-based action. The part that really made the game stand out, apart from its scale, was how the vehicles formed an integral part of its strategic combat. The amount of specialization was pretty vast too, with the number of classes you had access to. The combat in Battlefield is undoubtedly the best FPS multiplayer war experience out there.

After the World War II scene was sucked dry by the millions of RTS games based on it, Company of Heroes managed to breathe some freshness into it. It accomplished this with its innovative squad and cover systems, which made the game more involving than other RTS'. The game had some of the best sound effects and visuals, which went a long way in making the whole setting more believable, and giving you the kind of war experience no other RTSs cannot offer. So if you are a WWII RTS fan, you’ve got to play this game!
