Snapchat adds Geofilters to automatically suggest filters for certain locations
Not wanting to lag behind the competition, Snapchat was quick to introduce a new location-based service called Geofilters, stepping ahead of Slingshot – Facebook’s own ephemeral photo-sharing app. Though Facebook’s Slingshot already supports geo-tagging it’s far from Snapchat’s custom-designed graphics that highlight the user’s current location. It’s a fun, new way to share your location in your photos. Snapchat said on its official blog that although it requires users to enable location services, they won’t store their location information. Here’s what the team had to say on the official Snapchat blog: “We’ve had a lot of fun drawing up new filters for special locations in Los Angeles and New York. Swipe right on the preview screen to check them out – they’ll change depending on which neighborhoods you’re in! Although you’ll need to enable location services for this feature, we don’t store your location.” Tech Crunch says Geofilters could turn into Snapchat’s means to monetize as it can charge local businesses to let them add their custom-designed filters on the app. Geofilters have not yet been made available in all areas. We found Snapchat could not locate us in Mumbai, but it does look like the company will be adding more filters such as the Disneyland one as time passes.
