Smartphone adoption in India grew by 52 percent last year (Poll)

The smartphone boom of the past decade has certainly changed the game for those invested in technology. These days smartphones are ubiquitous, and the latest Internet Trends Report by Mary Meeker shows just how.

According to the report, 1.5 billion people in the world use a smartphone out of a total of 5 billion mobile phone users. In addition, the report says that mobile traffic now makes up 15 percent of the global Internet traffic. India’s chunk in that global number is still relatively small, with 67 million smartphone users in the country. That’s a 6 percent share of the global user base in 2012.

However, the year-on-year growth for smartphone adoption is the highest in India, with a 52 percent increase over the previous year. This is most certainly bound to increase. The Economist estimates that by 2020, there will be 10 billion connected mobile devices in the world, a large chunk of which will be made up by smartphone users, with tablets accounting for the rest.

India has the highest growth rate for smartphones

Unsurprisingly, the global smartphone market is dominated by Samsung, which has cornered 29 percent of the market. Apple is in second place with a 22 percent market share. Samsung’s dominance in the market has only come about in the past two years as a result of a 700 percent growth.

Android, iOS and Windows Phone users account for 88 percent of all smartphone users. Just six years ago, their combined share was a paltry 5 percent, when the devices by Nokia and BlackBerry were the most popular. China surpassed US users of iOS and Android with nearly 250 million users.
