Sharp Brings Forth A 85-inch Ultra HDTV With Super Hi-Vision

It looks like some people are taking the ‘HD’ in HDTV a bit too seriously. Sharp, in collaboration with Japan Broadcasting Corporation, have just announced a 85-inch LCD screen which has a mindboggling resolution of 7,680 x 4,320 (33 MegaPixels). The TV also uses Sharp’s UV2A: Ultraviolet induced multi-domain Vertical Alignment, which is a photo-alignment technology for precisely controlling the alignment of liquid crystal molecules in a LCD panel.

To keep that in perspective, a standard HDTV has a resolution of 1920x1080, which means the Sharp TV has over 16 times the resolution than any other TV in the market today. The prototype TV is also compatible with Super Hi-Vision, which is a next-generation television broadcast format developed by the Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NKH). They have also said that the super hi-def broadcast will start its trial runs in the year 2020 which, however you look at it, is a long way off.

There is no set date as to when we will see the TVs out in the market or how much this ‘ultra’ HDTV will cost, but all we can do for the moment is take a look at the video below and dream about owning one.
