Seamless updates on Android N will not be coming to existing smartphones

Google had announced plenty of new features for Android N at I/O 2016. While it's event in general failed to impress many this year, the plethora of new features made up for this. Among the announcements were some new features that we got to know about Android N, with the new seamless updates feature that seems to have gotten the attention of many. But as Android Police found out, the same feature will not be available for existing smartphones when it rolls out later this year.Google at its announcement did forget to mention the word 'new'. This is because the feature will work only with devices that come with two partitions.The Seamless updates feature requires two partitions to work. Simply put, one remains online and the other offline. When new firmware updates arrive, the updates are installed on the offline partition. When the device reboots, the partitions are switched delivering an updated smartphone to the user, while the older partition now goes offline and ready to receive updates.According to the same source, creating two partitions on your existing smartphone will require too much work, one that Google does not recommend since it could risk damaging a device.So similar to Google's VR-friendly Daydream, interested users will have to make a switch to a newer device in order to use the handy feature.
