Samsung working on Oculus Rift-like VR headsets for Galaxy devices: Report

So, till now we’ve heard about Samsung launching smartphones, tablets, smart televions, and smartwatches, which in particular is a recent phenomena. According to a report by Engadget Samsung is now planning on tapping another major category, virtual reality headsets, made familiar by Facebook’s recent acquisition of  Oculus Rift and Sony’s project Morpheus that is still under development. Some people related to the matter claim the Samsung virtual headset is set to be announced this year, points out the report. It is not strange that Samsung wants to be the first one to be out with their VR headset considering its rivals are also in the fray for VR head set glory. Some developers have already gained access to early versions of the headset which in its development stage is powered by Samsungs flagship products of the high-end Galaxy series. The VR headset which is designed along the lines of the Oculus Rift or the Android-powered GameFace Labs prototype will be created by Samsung and powered by Samsung products like Galaxy S5 and Note 3, suggests the report. The headset has an OLED screen which is either an equivalent or a better version of the one used in the Rift’s Development Kit. There are chances of the headset may come with wired connection instead of wireless. VR headset works better with a wired setup which reduces the chances of there being any kinks or lags while projecting images on the screen. The head movement depth-wise for the headset is not known. However, both Oculus Rift and Sony’s Morpheus come with separate cameras facing the player which estimates the depth with the help of sensors on both. The pricing of this headset is likely to be lesser than its rival brands. Though reports don’t expect the price of a VR headset to be really low. The report also reveals that Samsung’s in-house OS, Tizen will not be powering the headset. While the headset is being designed for gaming purposes, the question that still remains on our minds is the kind of games that one will be able to play using the headset. VR games are tough to crack considering the technology is still in its developing stage. Taking into account the ideology behind a VR headset, we believe first-person shooter games should nurture VR headsets to fullest potential making it the ultimate platform for gaming.
