Samsung wins latest patent battle against Apple

Apple suffered another loss in its ongoing patent infringement battle against Samsung as the Tokyo High Court, which was hearing the Apple vs Samsung Intellectual Property rights (IPR) case, upheld the verdict delivered by the local district court. It stated that the court found no merit in Apple’s claim that the South Korean company had infringed on certain patents held by the US-based company.

According to a report by Bloomberg, Apple had filed a case against its rival firm stating that Samsung had violated its patent relating to the synchronisation of music and video data on devices that had the provision for cloud computing. The report also stated that the California-based company was claiming damages worth 100 million Yen.

Samsung gets some relief

The court said that Samsung’s “Kies” software, installed in its Galaxy series, which Apple believed had infringed its patent, did not do so as the software recognised a file only by its name and size, and not by other information like its bit size and sampling rates as Apple claimed.

It has been some time that the two technology giants have been caught in a patent battle around the world, which include a number of cases in countries like Japan, Germany and Australia. This battle begun in April 2011 when Apple filed an IPR case against Samsung in the US courts. Since then the case made its way to countries like France, Australia and Germany before heading to Tokyo, where the verdict was ruled in favour of the Asian company.
