Samsung patent hints at three-sided wraparound display

At CES earlier this year, Samsung had showcased its smartphone prototype wherein the screen curves beyond the edge, making it look like a device with three-sided or wraparound display. Almost similar to the prototype shown at CES, Samsung reportedly has plans to unveil such a device in 2014. A new patent filed by the company details the method of operating functions for a portable terminal with bended display, reports The Verge.

Samsung's submission to the US Patent Office comes with a whole lot of detail. The company believes that the curved edges could be used as additional real estate for various purposes. The image below shows how the slide-to-unlock gesture can be pushed on the side display.

In another scenario, Samsung wants the side to provide information about email attachments too. It could also serve a charging meter or category sorter. In the image below, it displays the contact book concept wherein all the organisational aspects of the UI are pushed off  to the side.

An earlier report from Bloomberg had indicated that the company is committed to bringing "bended" displays sometime in 2014 or 2015. It should be noted that the Galaxy Round, recently launched in Korea, features a "curved" display while the new plans indicate that the company may be looking at devices with “bended” displays.
