Samsung is expected to debut phones with bendable displays in 2017: Sources

Samsung is reportedly working on two phones with bendable displays. The devices will feature OLED screens and are expected to debut in 2017.Unnamed sources tell Bloomberg that of the two devices, one device will have a 5 inch screen when used as a handset and an 8 inch one when unfolded. The second device will “fold in half like a cosmetic compact.”The devices are expected to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona next year and are codenamed “Project Valley.”Bloomberg points out that the timing of the release is probably meant to give Samsung a head start over Apple, which is also expected to announce its own OLED-based phones in the same year. A new Note handset is also expected, though this one will be called the Note 7 to align its naming scheme with that of the Galaxy series.OLED displays will eventually replace their LCD counterparts, if only because they offer superior efficiency, black levels and brightness. They’re also slimmer than LCDs because they don’t need a dedicated backlight unit. OLED technology is not new, but Samsung is the largest manufacturer of OLED panels and thus, has greater control of that space.
