Qualcomm announces the Toq smartwatch featuring Mirasol display and wireless charging

At its annual Uplinq Developer Conference, Qualcomm made a surprising announcement. It announced that its subsidiary, Qualcomm Connected Experiences will release a Qualcomm branded smartwatch towards the end of the year. The Qualcomm smartwatch dubbed Toq was showcased at the event.by Paul Jacobs, Chairman and CEO of Qualcomm.  The Toq is expected to be a second display for your Android smartphone which will connect via Bluetooth (compatible with Android 4.0.3 and above). Support for iOS expected in the future.

The most interesting bit about the watch is that it sports the proprietary Qualcomm Mirasol display, a reflective, colour capacitive touchscreen display, which consumes minimal power allowing you to use the watch for days without charging, according to Qualcomm. The watch also supports wireless charging using the Qualcomm WiPower LE technology and comes with stereo Bluetooth audio support. The smartwatch is powered by Qualcomm's proprietary operating system.

The Toq allows the wearer to manage phone calls, text messages, meeting reminders and other notifications from their wrist. Qualcomm has promised to continue adding more functionality to Toq in the form of software upgrades. Qualcomm will also allow third party developers to come up with applets for the smartwatch using its AllJoyn technology, which lets smartphones communicate with the smartwatch.

The Toq also comes in the 'Premium Audio Edition' which features the smartwatch along with wireless stereo headphones which feature a dedicated tweeter and woofer for superior sound quality. You can also place calls with the smartphone using headsets.

The official pricing was not announced but it is expected to sell somewhere in the USD 300 region (approx. Rs 20,400). It will start selling in Q4 2013. According to Qualcomm, the Toq will sell in limited numbers.
