Ola and Uber drivers go on strike in Delhi NCR demanding better pay and perks

If you have been facing issues booking a cab in the Delhi and NCR region, it is because Ola and Uber drivers are on a strike. Residents in Delhi, Noida and Gurugram will be affected as drivers have set certain demands. Recently the city Bengaluru faced a similar issue where cab drivers were protesting against unfair charges by Ola and Uber which ended in the banning of cab share services provided by the two cab aggregators.According to a report, drivers are not happy running cabs for Rs 6 per kilometre (the minimum the two companies charge customers). They also seek better perks, relaxed hours for targets, accident insurance, and others.The strike is said to be called by Sarvodaya Driver Association of Delhi, which is said to have about 2,000 members working for either Uber or Ola. The association hopes to add more cab drivers to join their indefinite agitation and also plan to gather at Ramlila Ground in central Delhi on Friday and then move to Jantar Mantar and protest by having a few representatives go on hunger strike.Ravi Rathore, senior executive member at the association said, “Companies should not add more new cars, they should stop ride-share services, also most importantly, we will not work for Rs 6 per kilometre. From Friday, we will go on indefinite strike till they agree to our demands.”“A small group of people are disrupting the Uber service in parts of Delhi, and there have been isolated reports of threats and intimidation. We are working hard to ensure reliable rides are available for everyone and we can keep the city moving. We call on authorities to ensure the safety of riders and drivers,” said an Uber spokesperson.
