What's more, China-based Huawei is toying with the idea of developing a 6.5-inch smartphone, sources told Digitimes. Huawei only recently unveiled its 6.1-inch phablet, the Ascend Mate, at this year’s CES. The 6.1-inch HD IPS+ LCD screen on the Huawei Ascend Mate has a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels for unsurpassed clarity and colour accuracy and "Magic Touch" to provide enhanced screen responsiveness even with gloves. Huawei Ascend Mate has a screen-to-body ratio of 73 percent – which the company claims to be the highest in the industry – to maximise user’s viewing pleasure for emails, documents, video or games. Huawei Ascend Mate features a 4050 mAh battery and Huawei's Hi-Silicon 1.5GHz quad-core processor.

Interestingly, sources have added that other handset vendors may just follow Huawei's footsteps and introduce 6-inch and larger handsets. "Market observers believe the increase in screen size will help the vendors further compete against tablet vendors, with 6-inch and larger units expected to push down sales of 7-inch tablets," the report goes on to add.

Observers added that the increase in screen size is likely to boost the performance of panel makers in the future, since this way the amount of panel volume used in producing handset panels would likely increase.
