No more inbox tabs: Google testing mobile-inspired major redesign for Gmail

We could be in for a major overhaul for Gmail, as Google seeks to bring a unified design language across platforms. Screenshots of an experimental version of Gmail have leaked which show major UI changes along with addition of new features for email management. The change in look is the most dramatic shift since Gmail was first launched. And it's more on the lines of the Google+ layout. According to Geek, the proposed changes are aimed at offering mobile-like experience. As can be seen in the images on the website, the tabs, which were introduced last year, have completely vanished. In its place is a fly-in menu on the left edge. If carried forward to the final build, it will add more lightness and remove the cluttered look of the current inbox. It's definitely a lot cleaner than the current look. Another noticeable change is the collapsible drawer for Hangouts.[caption id="attachment_223491" align="alignnone" width="640"] The redesigned Inbox interface (Image: Geek)[/caption]Geek further states, "The bars that stretch across the display look a a little awkward at first, but when you keep in mind how much information can be displayed in those bars it is a setup that could prove useful to anyone who needs a more detailed scan of their Inbox when hunting for something." The images also show email composing and reminder creation bubbles situated at the bottom right of the inbox.  There's a new pinned email system, which will keep important emails right at the top, and sounds like a much better implementation than “stars”. As of now, these features are in testing phase and it is difficult to say when these will be implemented. But our bet is on Google I/O next month, when Google will unveil a lot more changes to its services.
