MWC 2017: The Sony Xperia Touch is expensive, but it can turn any surface into a touchscreen

Alongside its smartphones, Sony revealed its Xperia Touch projector-type device that can essentially turn any surface into a touchscreen.

To look at it, the Xperia Touch is a cuboid with rounded edges and a flat face and rear. On the front, you’ll see a small window, which is where the image is projected from. This is used to project an image onto any surface.

The ‘Touch’ in the name comes from the fact that the device makes these projections interactive. Xperia Touch runs Android and so, the projections are essentially what you’d see if you were using an Android tablet. The device uses infrared sensors and a camera to capture your interactions and translate them to touch input.

The projector uses Sony's SXRD technology to project an image onto any surface, be it the table you're sitting at or the opposite wall. The image is automatically corrected for perspective and can even be projected at around a 45-degree angle in front of the device.
