MediaTek keen on expanding IoT ecosystem; pushing chips to different devices

Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek is going ahead with expanding its Internet of Things (IoT) eco-system by announcing a series of new partnerships with device makers which will carry MediaTek chipsets.Amazon's latest products, the Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 10 tablets will house the MediaTek MT8135 chipset whereas the Amazon Fire TV is powered by the MediaTek MT8173 chipset.MediaTek has also announced partnership with Tinitell, which has recently got a $1 million funding for making wrist phones for children in the European markets. MediaTek has also announced two software development kits (SDKs) that support Apple HomeKit which is the iOS framework for communication between connected devices in a user's home.Apart from this MediaTek has its own venture fund which supports startups who participate in the company's developer eco-systems. MediaTek Labs is an initiative to connect third-party developers to MediaTek products, business development teams and partners.MediaTek CMO Johan Lodenius said, "Our strategy is to innovate widely available technology that provides integrated connectivity, while investing in and nurturing developers and the maker community to deliver practical yet innovative solutions that make the world a better place."Also according to recent report in Digitimes, MediaTek is also rumoured enter the SSD controller market. According to the report, MediaTek has made some acquisitions towards this move by acquiring Richtek Technology, ILI technology, Integrated Silicon Solution's Taiwan subsidiary called Chingis Technology. It will compete with incumbents such as Marvell, Phison Electronics, Samsung and so on.
