MediaTek announces flagship MT6795 64-bit SoC with octa-core processor

Taiwanese chip maker MediaTek has announced its flagship system-on-chip - the MT6795. With this SoC, MediaTek has entered the 64-bit computing segment and is looking at being used in higher end 4G LTE phones upwards of Rs 20,000. The chipset can also be expected to be featured in Android powered tablets and/or set-top boxes. MediaTek MT6795 will house a 'true' octa-core processor with a targetted speed of 2.2GHz which means that all cores will get the same clock speeds. It will be paired with a dual-channel LPDDR3 memory clocked at 933MHz. With this SoC MediaTek will introduce its proprietary CorePilot technology which will help balance load across the cores to ensure optimal performance while managing the thermal profile. MediaTek had announced octa-core processor based SoCs in the past, but those made use of ARM's bit.LITTLE configuration. On the consumer side, the MT6795 will support 2K display support (2560x1600) and its multi-media subsystems will support 120Hz displays. It is also able to create and playback 480 frames per second at a 1080p full HD resolution thereby giving super slow motion videos. Devices with the MediaTek MT6795 chip will be seen retailing towards the end of the month, with the first devices launching in Asia followed by a US and Europe launches in 2015. Apart from the MT 6795, MediaTek's other 4G LTE supporting chipsets include MT6752 for mainstream users and MT6732 for entry-level users. MediaTek is also in talks with Google to launch Android One phones. Will the entry level chipset be seen on those kind of devices? Only time will tell.
