Macworld 2008: Apple Introduces Time Capsule
Apple introduces Time Capsule a new network-based device that extends the functionality of Time machine software backup.
In a bid to extend the functionality of its Time machine software backup program, Apple today introduced Time Capsule a new hardware designed to act as “companion hardware” for Time machine. The new hardware is physically similar to “Airport Extreme” and is an all-in-1 device that offers an 802.11n AP (access point) with dual 2.4/5 GHz frequency antennas for multi-channel support, a 500 or 1 TB HDD for backup, a network switch with 4 Gigabit LAN ports and one USB 2.0.
The HDD being used in this new device is “server grade”. In terms of standard support, the Airport is fully loaded with support for Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA/WPA-2), 128-bit WEP encryption, and a built-in NAT firewall. Since this is a network-based device, backup will become infinitely easier for any user. All he/she has to do is define their backup routine ranging from just changed files to entire system backups.
