Location tracking lawsuit grips Microsoft

Redmond-based software giant, Microsoft now sees itself dealing with a situation quite similar to that of competitor, Apple, a few months ago. Back then, Apple was found guilty of wrongly tracking the location of its iPhone users. Now, at a U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, Seattle, Plaintiff Rebecca Cousineau, a resident of Michigan alleges that Microsoft has, using the camera app on the Windows Phone 7 platform resorted to breach of privacy by tracking the location of several users.

The class action lawsuit states that Microsoft, on purpose designed a camera app, which would ignore all requests made by users to not track locations. The camera app, once activated starts noting down the user's geolocation details. Earlier in the day, Microsoft had issued a letter to the Congress stating that it was providing its users with an option to opt-in to its services, and hence only those who agreed to the location tracking norms were tracked.

Plaintiff Rebecca Cousineau now seeks  an injunction and punitive damages, among other remedies.
