LG Prepping Glasses-Free 3D Phone

At CES 2011 earlier this month, LG showcased a mobile 800x480 4.3-inch glasses-free 3D display. However, it was only a display with no sort of additional hardware attached to it, so most of the world figured it was only a work-in-progress and any real implementation would be way down the line. That doesn’t seem to be the case though, as James Choi, marketing strategy and planning team director at LG has told Pocket-lint to expect an announcement about an actually working glasses-free 3D mobile phone.

“3D mobile display is one technology that isn’t 3-5 years down the road,” he said before adding, “You’ll be very surprised shortly, of an actual working 3D device from LG. I’ll leave it there before I say too much”. With the Mobile World Congress lurking around the corner, it’s likely that is when we will be “very surprised”.

LG won't be the first company to do this though, as Sharp already have a phone out in Japan that boasts of glasses-free 3D. The Gagapagos 003SH made the news only yesterday for being the phone that'll be released with the Disney Mobile branding.Either way, whether you like 3D or not, this is a rather interesting development. We'll have to wait and see how it turns out, so stay tuned.
