LG Licenses ARM Chipsets

LG have so far avoided in-house manufacturing of CPUs, instead relying on third-party manufactured ones like NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 - which has been used in their Optimus 2X, Optimus 3D and the Optimus Pad smartphones and tablet respectively.

Time for some ARM twisting, perhaps?

That seems to be changing now though, what with LG acquiring licenses for ARM chipsets which would enable them to manufacture their own processors for their devices - a move which many had seen coming. The chipset in question is the upcoming ARM Cortex A15, which is expected to roll out in devices towards the fag end of 2012. Here’s what Boik Sohn, VP and Head of System IC Center, LG Electronics had to say about the deal. “This new licensing agreement will provide LG with the next generation processor technology that will allow us to maintain leadership in display enabled connected devices, such as smart digital TV's and smart phones, and drive our platform strategy."

The deal also includes licenses for the current-gen driving A9 chipset, as well as the upcoming Mali T604 graphics processor. It’ll be interesting to see what LG manage to conjure up at their manufacturing plants.
