King of Fighters Online is Dota-styled with fighting game characters

When most people hear the words King of Fighters, a MOBA game is the last thing they would imagine. Developer DragonFly doesn't think so. The company has announced that the long-ago-announced King of Fighters Online will be a MOBA, according to Polygon. Beta for the game will be starting in Thailand on September 3.

Complete with requisite beam attack

The game's roster is set to be quite impressive. If the official website is anything to go by, King of Fighters Online will boast a 200-strong character roster, with characters from all the King of Fighters games being present in some capacity. All of the characters moves in the game will be based on their combos and moves from the original fighting game.

The shift to a different genre undoubtedly comes because of the massive success the franchise has been seeing in recent times. One of the frontrunners of the genre, League of Legends, has a massive player base that rivals the likes of World of Warcraft. The other leader of the genre, Dota 2, recently concluded its yearly International tournament with a prize pool of $2.8 million, $1.2 million of which was crowdfunded through the in-game store.

On the other side of the fence, developer Instaburst has been working on a fighting game version of the ever-popular League of Legends. Dubbed League of Fighters, the game will be free-to-play and will see a release on PC.
