Huawei Mate 30 series launch highlights: Mate 30, Mate 30 Pro, Vision TV and Watch GT 2 announced

Huawei's new camera-focused smartphones have been announced without Google inside.

Huawei at a launch event held in Munich, announced its Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro smartphones also accompanied by its new Vision TV and its new smartwatch the Watch GT 2.[caption id="attachment_7371381" align="alignnone" width="1280"]

Image: Huawei[/caption]The Mate series is a more premium offering from Huawei and this year it is expected to feature a new smartphone trend with displays, called the waterfall display, a trend started by Vivo. The waterfall display trend involves a curved edge display that almost curves halfway into the sides of the smartphone that takes the bezel-less design to the next level, making the sides of frame appear invisible from the front.

The Mate 30 was announced at 799 Euros for the 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage variant while the Mate 30 Pro was announced in an 8 GB RAM + 256 GB storage variant at 1099 Euros.Huawei also announced a new Porsche Design Mate 30 RS with 12 GB RAM + 512 GB storage at 2099 Euros

Huawei Watch GT 2 pricing

Huawei's new and improved Watch GT 2 now packs in a better OLED display and now comes with a 2-week standby time. The Huawei Watch GT 2 is priced at 229 Euros for the 42 mm variant and 249 Euros for the 46 mm model.

Android without Google inside

However, the biggest highlight of the Mate 30 Pro launch was software. While Huawei has been in a constant uphill battle with the US, ever since the US government accused the telecom equipment manufacturer of spying. Android comes from Google, so a recent ban has now officially forced Google and other US-based services to detach from Huawei, which basically means no Android or Google apps.At the very end of the launch event, Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO, Richard Yu announced that the new smartphones will not make use of Google Mobile Services (GMS) thanks to the ban but will have to make do with the HMS core instead. In short, Huawei's brand new smartphones will not come with Google apps inside, which also raises questions about the availability of other apps made by US-based services like Facebook. And since Facebook also owns Instagram and WhatsApp it will be interesting to see how Mate 30 Pro users can do without these services.
