The idea of having free Wi-Fi while sitting in a coffee shop or staying in a five-star hotel has now become part of the service that users have come to expect. Huawei Devices is now planning to take that to next level by launching free Wi-Fi services for travellers using Easy Cabs in Delhi and NCR.

The data card manufacturer has allied with Bharti Airtel for 3G internet services, as well as the Easy Cabs transport service, to run the campaign for a month. How does this work out, you might ask?

According to sources, Huawei has placed its Wi-Fi data card E355 device in the cab’s cigarette lighter slot which is powered using an adapter. The 3G services can be accessible from a laptop, iPad, or phone using a password which will be provided by the driver of the cab. So far, the company has hooked up a hundred vehicles for the initiative.Huawei and Airtel offer free Wi-Fi on Easy Cab. (Image credit:afaqs)

Being a campaign, you can’t expect advertising to be far behind. Huawei has blocked advertising space using both the interior and exterior of the cabs. Airtel will also be providing its service free of cost to promote its high speed 3G Internet services. Huawei plans to reach out to approximately one lakh people by the end of the campaign. The initiative itself is setting the company back around Rs 10 lakh.

Huawei's E355 device first came to the markets last year with a price tag of Rs 5,499. According to the company, the device is cost efficient owing to its Wi-Fi capability that allows for multiple connections. The device also allows users to switch between operators according to their required Internet plans.

This initiative marks the first campaign conducted by the organisation and will make use of social media and a series of on-ground initiatives. Huawei has also invited author Chetan Bhagat to serve as its brand ambassador.
