Grand Theft Auto Online may have microtransactions

While Grand Theft Auto 5 is out now, its multiplayer component Grand Theft Auto Online, is going to be available on October 1. However, the flow of information doesn’t cease. Reddit users have spotted that when attempting to connect to the DLC store, the game attempts to access an XML file on Rockstar’s cloud which has four so-called “cash cards”, the values of which range from $100,000 to $1.25 million. This essentially means that microtransactions may be part of Grand Theft Auto Online. The prices of these cash cards haven’t been revealed yet, however, and we’ll have to wait and see how much they cost.

Buy money with real money

The description of the cash cards in the XML file hints that these microtransactions won’t be making their way into the single player part of the game. Here’s the description: “Cash is king in this town. Solve your money problems and help get what you want across Los Santos and Blaine County with the purchase of cash packs for Grand Theft Auto Online. All purchased cash is automatically deposited into your character’s bank account. Spend wisely, cash therapy is fleeting.”

The biggest hint that these cash cards are a part of the microtransaction system comes from the fact that the same XML file also has references to the extra digital goodies people get when they buy the Collector’s Edition or Special Edition of GTA 5. While it’s no secret that these goodies will be made available for the rest of the world to buy after some time, it also points to the fact that the cash cards will be purchasable items.
