Google pulls plug on fake Siri 'app' in Android Market

For about a couple of hours on Friday, an app called Siri for Android was functional on the Android Marketplace, reports The Next Web. Claiming to be the 'official' Siri app for the Android platform, the app did manage to get itself some hits, before Google took notice and pulled it down, immediately. In fact, according to The Next Web, within a short span of time the app was installed on some 1,000 devices.

With Google, one can expect them to go a step further, too. So, while they pulled down the app quickly, it also managed to remove all apps put up by the developer, who goes by the name of Official App - a smart pick considering that it easily trapped unsuspecting users into believing that the app in question was an official one. The fake 'official' Siri app for Android on the marketplace used Apple Siri's own icon to make itself seem more believable.

Siri, Apple's voice-based assistant who debuted in their recently launched iPhone 4S has been fairly popular amongst its users, despite the occasional slew of criticism. This, however, does not explain the rise in such instances, which is certainly not good for Google.
