Glass Explorer Edition to ship to developers within next month

Google has apparently told TechCrunch at Google Venture's "Glass Collective" event that it is working towards bringing Glass to developers within the coming month. That said, there is still no word on when Google will ship Glass.

Somehow, the timeline fits well, considering May is also when Google will hold its annual developer conference, Google I/O, in Moscone Center, San Francisco.

Earlier this year, Google released a video of Glass that demonstrated the many ways in which users can make it a part of their daily lives. The demo showed scenes and sights through the eyes of the wearer. The video showed how you can instruct Glass to click a picture of the scene in front of you or record a video. The wearer has to say “take a picture” to tell Glass to take a picture.

May reach developers within next month

Google Glass can also provide route instructions to the wearer. You can also participate in a Google Hangout and let others see the sights and scenery you're enjoying.

There was also a more detailed video of Google developer advocate Timothy Jordan's presentation at last month's SXSW (South by Southwest Interactive conference). The roughly hour-long video shows Jordan taking the assembled crowd through a demo of Glass. "To experience Glass, you really need to put it on," he said.

He stressed on how Glass stays in the wearer's field of vision without getting in the way. After donning it, Jordan first asked Glass to make a live Google search and then instructed it to take a picture. All in all, he demonstrated how it was possible to control Glass using voice, head gestures and touch. By swiping, he even showed off the timeline cards that depict the activities carried out over time.

"Glass is a unique platform. It is fundamentally different than existing platforms like your phone or tablet," he said, while speaking on the design for Glass. He added that Glass users would want to have the technology in front of them when they need it and move out of the way when they don't.

He then moved on to talk about the Mirror API. "We built the Mirror API, so people could build Glass services quickly and easily," he said.

Google Glass will be available in Charcoal, Tangerine, Shale, Cotton and Sky colours.
