Flipboard and Facebook aren’t the only apps that will be making a debut on Windows 8. Social check-in service Foursquare is going to launch an app for Windows 8 tablets too.

The company announced the app at Microsoft’s Build 2013 conference in San Francisco even as Microsoft’s Steve Guggenheimer showed off a native Foursquare app that will be a part of Windows 8.Coming soon! (Image credit: The Verge)

The native app is currently being built and will hit Windows 8 first followed by Windows RT tablets. According to a video from the event by GeekWire, it looks like the app will be making ample use of Windows 8’s horizontal scroll as well as design guidelines. More importantly, the app’s main use seems to be exploring venues and checking out what your friends are up to rather than checking-in. The app for Windows 8 and RT could work well in tandem with Foursquare for your smartphone. You could explore places and venues on your Windows app and then go on to discover and check-in to them from your smartphones on the go.

"People want to experience and explore the world around them, and the Foursquare for Windows 8 app helps them do that. It makes it fun to search for a place for dinner or to go out, and helps people discover new experiences," Dennis Crowley, Co-founder and CEO of the service, said in a statement. "We've worked with Microsoft on a bunch of initiatives over the years, and this product is another example of the great things we can do together."

The service had tweaked its appearance for Android tablets earlier this month by giving it a slightly enhanced version of Foursquare for Android. Even while iPad users have been hankering for an optimised version of the iOS app for Foursquare, it looks like Windows RT users will get lucky before them.
