Facebook has lifted up a ban it put in place back in May that banned users from posting gory videos of acts like beheadings and casualties on the website. Now, Facebook says, it is okay for you to post such videos, if you’re condemning the depicted acts.
BBC News has reported that Facebook says its users should be free to watch and condemn such videos and was considering adding warnings in any case. "Facebook has long been a place where people turn to share their experiences, particularly when they're connected to controversial events on the ground, such as human rights abuses, acts of terrorism and other violent events," the company said in a statement. "People share videos of these events on Facebook to condemn them. If they were being celebrated, or the actions in them encouraged, our approach would be different."
Facebook to allow beheading videos back on the site
Back in May, Facebook had said that it would delete violent videos users had flagged. It came as a response to the backlash that was caused due to two videos of executions being shared all over the social networking website. Facebook has not spoken about when it lifted the ban on graphic content but one of the website’s Statement of Rights and responsibilities still states, "You will not post content that: is hate speech, threatening, or pornographic; incites violence; or contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence."
Even so, Facebook wants to leave no stone unturned in assuring that the videos are used for the right purpose. With human rights groups and suicide-watch ones alarmed at this change in policy, Facebook will have to be crystal clear about how beheading videos can be used.
