After Twitter underwent sporadic issues with the site loading yesterday, Facebook followed suit with issues of its own. Users across North America and Asia especially were having trouble logging in to their Facebook accounts around 7:30 AM IST.

Users trying to log in to Facebook around this time were accosted by a “site error” message or were informed that the social network was facing downtime for maintenance work. The outage lasted for about 90 minutes.

Understandably, flustered users of Facebook took to Twitter to complain about the inability to log in to their accounts. “Looks like Facebook is down! Has been for the past 15 min or so. Anyone else having the same problem?” wrote @gopalshenoy while @Moni_Rodr tweeted, “Interesting to see #Facebook down and everyone complaining-- shows how dependent we are on social media.” Uh oh!

Yesterday, Twitter was facing issues of its own with a glitch rendering timelines frozen and delaying deliveries of tweets for a good one hour or so. It was noticed that third party apps including TweetDeck and Hootsuite seemed unaffected on either platforms for a while but ended up facing similar issues within minutes of the website freezing.

It did take Twitter a long time to restore normalcy to its website as well as mobile apps. For a micro-blogging website that churns out a high number of tweets per second, an hour seemed a long time for Twitter regulars.

The Facebook downtime saw a larger number of user complaints thanks to the fact that it occurred at around 7:30 AM IST which is 6 PM Pacific Standard Time. The inability to access Facebook on a Monday evening in the US is what caused a lot of the outrage on Twitter. Whatever the problem has been, it looks like it has been fixed for now by Facebook. Hopefully, we won’t be seeing another outage anytime soon.
