Cydia for OS X?

With Apple’s Mac App Store launch looming, Jay Freeman, creator of the Cydia app platform for jailbroken iPhones and iPod Touches, plans to launch a similar platform for the OSX too. With this move, ‘saurik’ as Freeman’s more famously known on the internet has eased the concerns that many developers had with regards to Apple’s hardline policies and restrictions.

While personal computers obviously don’t need to be jailbroken to install software, Cydia will still serve its purpose as a centralized application platform – both for users to find the programs they need and for developers to sell their applications free from Apple’s control. Speaking on the development, Freeman had this to say:__STARTQUOTE__“The point is to provide a market for the kinds of “modifications to third party software” that people like writing on jailbroken iPhones, and to allow people to install those modifications in a way that reasonably makes sense.
