Potato farmers in West Bengal just got high tech, thanks to Multi Commodity Exchange of India Limited (MCX), an independent multi-commodity exchange recognized by the Central Government for facilitating online trading. MCX will begin selling potatoes online on behalf of farmers from September 1 under the brand name Tarakeswar Alu.The crop would be procured from Hooghly (where Tarakeshwar is located) as well as Burdwan, Howrah and other districts of West Bengal, which produces an aggregate of eight million tonnes of potatoes. State Agriculture Minister Naren De informed the media that online trading might bring parity in prices across the country and benefit both the farmer and the trader since farmers often get poor prices by selling the crop irrespective of demand.Read more here.
