BlackBerry has launched a new today launched a new BlackBerry 9720 smartphone in India which is priced at Rs 15,990. The 9720 runs on BlackBerry's older BB7 operating system.

BlackBerry today launched a new BlackBerry 9720 smartphone in India which is priced at Rs 15,990.

The 9720 runs on BlackBerry's older BB7 operating system.

"This new smartphone is absolutely stunning and provides an ideal choice for urban youth and customers who are looking to upgrade from a feature phone or existing BlackBerry Curve smartphone to an affordable, easy-to-use smartphone with rich messaging and social networking connectivity,"Sunil Lalvani, Managing Director for India at BlackBerry, said in a release.

Features of the BlackBerry 9720 include: 2.8-inch touch-enabled display, QWERTY keyboard, 7 hours of talktime, 512MB Internal storage and a 5 megapixel camera. The screen resolution is 480 x 360 resolution, at 214ppi and the phone has up to 18 days standby time.

Other features include:

BlackBerry 7 OS: The new BlackBerry 9720 smartphone comes with BlackBerry 7 OS version 7.1, which features an updated interface that lets users swipe to unlock the phone or access the camera from the lock screen,

BBM: The phone has a dedicated BBM key. It also includes BBM Voice, which lets users chat over Wi-Fi for free. (However BBM Voice calls required BB 5 OS and higher for both parties, and a BlackBerry data pack.)

It also has an Built-in FM Radio.

Multicast option lets users type a message or take picture and then share it simultaneously on Facebook, BBM and Twitter.

The BlackBerry 9720 smartphone is expected to be available in India from 14 September.
