Bharat Electronics to Manufacture Solar-powered Tablet

The tablet manufacturing industry in the country is slowly, but steadily picking up. First it was Notion Ink’s Adam, and then the budget friendly, Sakshat tablet. Now, Bharat Electronics is set to launch a solar-powered tablet running Android Froyo. With pricing being a main concern for the Indian masses, the company is to, supposedly, sell the tablet in the Rs. 3,000 region.

According to a report, the yet unnamed tablet has been developed for a poverty survey for the Ministry of Rural Development. Bharat Electronics is said to be supplying six lakh tablets by the end of November. This is definitely a short amount of time for a company that has recently announced their slate and also keeping in mind the number of units said to be manufactured.

This Android 2.2 tablet is said to be solar-powered and will enable data to be stored on a cloud-based server. As of now the tablet is not being manufactured for the masses, but Ashwani Datt, Chairman and Managing Director, Bharat Electronics Limited, has not ruled out the possibility of this happening. Speaking about this, he says that having done this, they would try to continue having some business out of this and the tablet competes well with anything in the world market. He adds that however, something that would keep Bharat Electronics Limited worried would be customizing and keeping the costs.

Hopefully, this tablet will be made available for the masses. Following in the footsteps of other countries, this move could benefit students, too as they could use this, instead of lugging around huge bags of books, which have become a constant worry these days.
