BBM for Android and iOS downloaded 10 million times in 24 hours

If you thought the month-long delay in launching BlackBerry Messenger globally on iOS and Android was going to dampen the spirits of users, think again. A proud and relieved BlackBerry has announced today that BBM for iOS and Android has clocked in 10 million downloads within the first 24 hours of its launch.

In a blog post announcing this milestone, Andrew Bocking, head of BBM at BlackBerry also announced that the app rose quickly on both Android and iOS app stores, with it taking the number one slot on Apple’s store in over 75 countries within the first 24 hours. The figure is pretty impressive considering the troubles BlackBerry seemed to be going through while trying to launch the app over the past month. After nearly two false starts – one that saw an unreleased Android version of BBM leak out to 1 million downloads – BBM now seems to have a stable journey. Over six million users signed up to be first in line to get access to the app when it released. Now, over 10 million users have downloaded the app.

“I’ve seen reports of apps that launched with one million downloads in a day, but over 10 million? Amazing,” Bocking wrote. It must also be noted that the first 5 million downloads for the app came within the first eight hours of the launch on iOS and Android stores.

The second-time launch has had its rough spots too. A lot of users have still been complaining about error messages – especially pertaining to network connectivity – the app seems to be throwing up. There are other forced closure errors, inability to sign in sort of errors that users on Twitter are still complaining about, especially on Android. Lastly, thanks to the overwhelming demand for the application, users who have only just signed up to get in line to receive entry seem to be finding it too hard to wait.
