Asus will unveil an augmented reality product at CES next year

We’ve heard rumours before that ASUS was working on an "augmented reality (AR) product," but now, they seem to have confirmed its existence at Computex, Taiwan. Speaking to Cnet, Jerry Shen, CEO, Asus, said that an AR device from Asus will be unveiled at CES next year. He also added that they’ve put the unveiling of the product on hold at the request of a “very big player.” Is Microsoft that "very big player?" Asus wouldn't say.As far as we’re aware, the only other really big player in the AR field is Microsoft with their Hololens device. While promising, the Hololens isn’t ready for the general public just yet. It’s still $3,000 for a start, and right now, is only available to developers (with deep pockets). Apps are also limited.Virtual Reality transports you into another world, but also cuts you off from the real one. AR on the other hand, will keep you rooted in the present and enhance your reality at the same time. VR shows real promise for gaming, but AR might offer much more than that.At this moment, we have no idea what ASUS’ AR product is and what it has in store for us. We don't even know if it will be at least as capable as Microsoft’s Hololens device. It could very well end up like a HUD (Heads-Up-Display) or overlay of sorts.Regardless, we’re excited to see another major player dipping their fingers in the AR pie. CES 2017 can’t come fast enough!
