Around 10,000 Nokia Android smartphone prototypes are in the wild: Report

Microsoft’s acquisition of Nokia’s mobile and services divisions has created quite a few ripples in the mobile market. While the move may mean that the latter will focus purely on Windows Phone-based devices, there have been rumours of the Finnish company looking at other OS’s to power its smartphones, the main one being OS rival Android.

While many users have given up on the thought of an Android-running Nokia Lumia smartphone, a new leak suggests that such a device exists and there are more than one of them in Nokia’s secret laboratories. According to a Weibo account, the company had allegedly ordered 10,000 phones with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 200 SoC under the hood to be made by Foxconn. These Android-running smartphones were apparently supposed to be prototypes and come bearing the name “Mountain View” which could have drawn inspiration from the city in which Google has its head quarters.

While this piece of information could just be a rumour, the potential that a Nokia Android-powered smartphone will bring to the market seems big. The Finnish company comes with a bunch of good features like PureView, Ovi icons as well as Nokia Pure font, which was last seen on Symbian. Earlier reports stated that porting the Android OS onto Lumia smartphones was not a difficult process. And Google’s massive Play store will also be a significant benefit for users.

The popularity of Android is testament to the fact that users like the OS. It was also stated that Nokia’s agreement with Microsoft for Windows Phone, before the latter shelled out $7.2 billion for the company, was going to end in 2014. While there is still no concrete evidence to validate these rumours, it can only be hoped that a leak pops up some time with an image of Nokia Android-powered smartphone gracing our screens.
