Apple launches $229 16GB iPod touch without back camera; coming soon to India

Apple has got the 16GB variant of its fifth-generation iPod touch up on its online store. Priced at $229 (roughly Rs 12,866), the new iPod touch comes sans the rear camera and instead features only a front-facing FaceTime HD camera with 1.2MP photos and HD video (720p) capabilities. Apple has also given the loop lanyard hook a miss on the 16GB iPod touch model. On the Apple India website though, the 16GB variant of the iPod touch is listed as "Coming soon". So, if you have been particularly interested in owning it, you know that the wait is nearing its end.

Where it is available, the 16GB iPod touch can be purchased in Black and Silver colour. When it went up on sale last year, the new 5th generation iPod touch was dubbed as the thinnest iPod touch ever. The 16GB variant too features a 4-inch Retina display, Apple’s A5 chip and Siri. Housed in an anodised aluminium body, like the 32GB and 64GB variants, it’s even slimmer than the iPhone 5 at just 6 mm thick. It weighs 86 g.

With Apple’s dual-core A5 chip inside, the 5th generation iPod touch is touted to deliver up to twice the processing power and up to seven times faster graphics than the fourth generation iPod touch. Apple states that the device has a battery life of up to 40 hours of music playback and up to eight hours of video playback. It also packs in the popular Apple EarPods.
