Apple files patent for Pencil holder for iPad and iPhone Smart Covers

If you’re among the few who use the Apple Pencil on a daily basis, you’ll be aware that stowing it away is one of the biggest pains of owning the device.Apple, in all its wisdom, made a device with a perfectly circular cross-section. Because of this, the device will never sit still on any platform unless it’s perfectly level. The lack of any clip means that it can fall out of your pocket and the lack of anything so simple as even a magnetic clamp means that the device doesn’t actually attach itself to the iPad Pro like you’d expect.[caption id="attachment_365474" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Image: Patently Apple[/caption]Thankfully, Patently Apple appears to have stumbled across a patent filing for an accessory that might alleviate these concerns. The accessory will apparently attach itself to the iPad’s Smart Keyboard cover and hints at an iPhone cover attachment as well.The patents themselves don’t describe anything special and only suggest a kind of loop that can be magnetically attached to your iPad Keyboard cover and, potentially, a future iPhone Smart Cover.Given that the pencil has no clip, one can assume that the Pencil is held in place by friction. Patently Apple reports that the application itself was filed in Q3 2015. We wonder why it hasn’t seen the light of day yet.
