How AI helped the FBI piece together the White House correspondents' dinner attack
AI-powered forensic tools are helping law enforcement analyze digital evidence faster while strengthening criminal investigations.

An AI-powered digital forensics firm has revealed that its platform was used as part of the FBI's urgent investigation into the attempted assassination at this year's White House Correspondents' Dinner. The development comes as a recent report highlights how law enforcement agencies are increasingly turning to AI tools to sift through the growing volumes of digital evidence generated during criminal investigations. According to Axios, such tools are also being used to jumpstart cold cases, investigate missing persons, and assist in a wide range of criminal probes.
Exterro, the digital forensics company behind the platform, said its technology was used during the frenzied 48 hours between the incident and charges being filed against Cole Thomas Allen. However, the company has not disclosed how the FBI specifically used its tools. Exterro said investigators typically rely on its platform to comb through messages stored on seized devices, social media accounts, and other digital trails linked to a case.
How Exterro's FTK Suite Works
The FTK Suite, which was used during the investigation, provides an on-premises platform that allows investigators to organize evidence from a case into a single repository that authorized users can access simultaneously.
The platform is designed to help investigators process and organize large volumes of digital evidence after it has been collected. Through an embedded AI assistant, users can search evidence using natural language prompts, such as identifying images of specific objects, locating photos and videos featuring a suspect, or verifying whether a person was present at a particular location and time.
Exterro says its AI models are not trained on customer data and can be deployed entirely on-premises, allowing sensitive evidence to remain within secure facilities without requiring internet or cloud access. The company, whose customers include law enforcement agencies and around 40 Fortune 100 firms, stresses that investigators remain responsible for reviewing evidence and making charging decisions.
The platform also includes tools to detect potential deepfakes, addressing growing concerns over AI-generated or manipulated evidence in court. As AI becomes increasingly common in digital investigations, the debate is shifting from whether investigators should use the technology to how it can be deployed responsibly and reliably.
